It’s a web server! June 20, 2007

I have just installed and configured a web server. On my Nokia E61. This was apparently announced yesterday.
So, why would anybody want to run a web server on their smartphone? Well ...
Maybe you're the extroverted guy and want to run your blog and its server right where you are. If your phone has a camera, you can also grant access to photo galleries on your phone. Or you can allow visitors to automatically take a snapshot with your camera. This option might be a bit dangerous but there is also an option to let visitors ask you to take a picture. You will be alerted by an instant message generated on your phone.
Or are you the important managerial type of guy and want to grant several people read or read/write access to the calendar on your phone? Yes, calendar entries can actually be edited and created using the web interface. If you're authorized, of course.
How about letting visitors to your mobile web site send you instant messages or SMS to your phone? This won't cost you anything since the web server creates and 'sends' the SMS locally. The instant message is similar to an SMS except that it pops up automatically and is not automatically saved on the phone.
Oh, and there's the old-skool guestbook application as well.
Nokia also has a nice feature overview.
You can use any of your connections to run the server on (you can even run it locally, so you can only access it using your smartphone's browser). When using your carriers's mobile internet connection, requests to your server will be handled by a server run by Nokia. Your smartphone opens a connection to this server also and is fed the requests. This is also the server that serves up the not-available message when the web server is not online. If you want to, you can lock out anonymous users right on that server, before they ever get to your phone. You can also lock out all users except for your own account.
If you want to take a look ... go to http://jmi.mymobilesite.net. Don't be surprised if the server is a little slow. Remember, it's running on a smartphone.
There's some more information at https://mymobilesite.net/. Go check it out! It runs on S60 3rd Ed. That site also has lots of screenshots of both the web interface and the web server.
This should be interesting. I am afraid that having the internet connection constantly open will seriously eat into battery life. We'll see, I guess.
